The Land That Feeds Asia

Agriculture, technology and the geography of food

Asia is known for its megacities, factories and technological rise. Yet beyond its urban centres lies another Asia: a vast landscape of fields, plantations, river deltas and farms that feeds more than half of humanity.

Agriculture remains one of Asia’s most important physical systems. This series explores what the region produces, where its strengths lie, how technology is transforming farming and what climate, water, urbanisation and demographic change could mean for its future.

Beyond Asia’s megacities lies an immense agricultural landscape shaped by rice terraces, grain fields, plantations, irrigation and increasingly engineered farming. Understanding this geography reveals the physical system beneath Asia’s extraordinary economic and technological transformation.

Asia does not feed the world through sheer agricultural volume alone. Its real power lies in concentrated food flows — from rice and palm oil to aquaculture, coffee and spices — that global markets cannot easily replace.

About This Series

The Land That Feeds Asia looks beyond agriculture as an industry. It examines the relationship between land, water, technology, people and food security — and how these systems are changing across one of the most diverse and rapidly transforming regions in the world.
