Greater China

One Civilisation. Four Different Paths

Greater China is often viewed through the lens of geopolitics. Discussions about trade, technology and security dominate international attention. Yet behind these debates lies something much older.

China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau share a civilisation that stretches back thousands of years. While each has followed a different historical and political path, all continue to reflect a common cultural heritage in distinct ways.

Understanding Greater China therefore begins not with borders, but with civilisation.

China is often viewed through geopolitics and economic competition. This portrait explores the deeper foundations of Chinese society, revealing how history, civilisation and statecraft continue to shape one of the world’s most influential nations.

Taiwan is more than semiconductors and geopolitics. Shaped by migration, colonial history, democratisation and technological ambition, the island has developed a distinctive society whose identity continues to evolve through the many historical layers it carries.

Hong Kong was built through movement and connection. Migration, Cantonese culture, colonial institutions, manufacturing, finance and extraordinary urban density created a society between worlds—one whose future now depends on redefining what it connects.

Macau is far more than a casino economy. Centuries of encounter between Chinese society and Portuguese institutions created a distinctive culture whose architecture, food, language and traditions still shape this small territory at the edge of southern China.

About this Regional Series

Greater China is part of Portrait of Asia, Altair Media Asia’s exploration of the people, societies and economies shaping a changing continent.

This regional series examines four societies with shared cultural roots but different political systems, economic models and institutional development. Together, they show how a common civilisation can give rise to remarkably different paths towards modernity.

Rather than beginning with geopolitics, Greater China starts with people, culture and institutions—the foundations upon which technology, government and economic development continue to evolve.
